27 dolphins found dead after massive oil spill on island of Mauritius
The Japanese bulk carrier MV Wakashio ran aground on a coral reef near the eastern coast of Mauritius on July 25. It was carrying a 4,000-ton cargo of oil and spilled more than 1,000 tons into the sea along the coastline of Mauritius. Pounded by the surf for days, the ship’s hull cracked and on Aug. 6 it began leaking fuel into the waters of the Mahebourg Lagoon, fouling a protected wetlands area, mangroves, and a small island that was a bird and wildlife sanctuary.
The influence of Mauritius oil spill
Thousands of locals sprang into action after the spill, working quickly to remove wildlife and plant life from the affected area. Scientists had dubbed the spill the country’s worst ecological disaster after it covered a vast area of endangered corals and affected fish and other marine life.
Now all this is threatened as the oil is seeping into the soil and the coral reefs, in this photo supplied by Greenpeace on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2020, we can see dolphins lay dead on the shore on the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius.
