Types of Ship Launching Methods In Marine Industry

Ship launching is one of the most important procedures in the construction of the entire ship. The launch slide, a structure consisting of the tilt mode of the shipyard is an important aspect of the ship emission process and has been widely used to make new manufacturing or repair vessels.

Some developments in the field of ship launch systems have been seen in the past few years to improve the safety and stability of ships in the water.

Different types of Ship launching methods

Traditionally, four main types of methods are used to complete the ships launched in water. These methods are:

  1. Airbag launching
  2. Gravitational type launching
  3. Floating-out type launching
  4. Mechanical Type launching

 

NO.1 Airbags launching

Using marine airbags for ship launching is a safe and innovative method. And these airbags are usually cylindrical in shape with hemispherical heads at both ends. They are made of reinforced rubber layers and have a high load capacity. This method can easily be used in all types and sizes of vessels.

NO.2 Gravitational type launching:

The gravitational type launching system is divided into three main types, namely:

  1. Longitudinal Oiled slide way Launching
  2. Longitudinal Steel – Roller slide way Launching
  3. Side Oiled slide way Launching

1. Longitudinal Oiled Slideway launching

The sliding method of longitudinal oil is one of the oldest launch systems. Using this system, the ship slides on the slide and enters the water at its own weight. Oil or wax is used to help the sliding process.

The main advantage of this method is that it uses a simple device that can be used to have a ship with a different tonnage and type. However, the oil coating used to smoothly slide the ship will pollute water. During the release, the front part of the ship has huge pressure.

2. Longitudinal Steel – Roller Slideway Launching

In this type of ship launching method, a steel roller is used to replace the oil to reduce friction during the sliding process. This method employs high-strength steel rollers, safety devices, and steel sheets. The steel sheet on the wooden slide helps the sliding process, the slide helps them protect from steel balls.

The net bag is used at the end of the slider to collect steel balls to use again. This method is most effective and easy to start. However, the initial installation cost is high.

3. Side Oiled Slideway Launching

The slide launching system of the side oil is also one of the most widely used ship launching systems. This type of system is mainly two types.

In the first type, the sliding track extends into the water, and the marine slide will slide the ship into the water. In the second method, the sliding track is until water and the ship slide into the water together with the frame. The ship then becomes stable based on its buoyancy and stability factors. This emission requires ships with huge stability and strength.

NO.3 Floating- Out Type Launching 

 The floating out type launching is carrying out for ships that are built-in dry-docks and are launched by filling the dock with water. (Technically this is not a ship launching procedure) The floating-out type launching system is a simple, effective, and safe procedure. Although the initial investment is high, this method is most widely used by the shipyard.

NO.4 Mechanical Type Launching

The mechanical type ship launching system can be divided into the following types:

  • Longitudinal mechanized slideway launching
  • Two points longitudinal mechanized chute launching
  • Wedge-shaped mechanized vehicles launching
  • Slope change transverse area mechanized vertical chute launching
  • High-low track slide mechanization launching
  • Mechanized comb slide
  • Lifting ship equipment

All of the above systems require mechanical features to start ships. High building and maintenance expenditure, and the system’s liquidity and control factors are not the latest markups. All of these methods are mainly used for smaller size containers and cannot be used in large high tonnage vessels.
