The Philippine government has approved a project to build the New Cebu International Container Port.

The construction work are expected to cost approximately 9.2bn Philippine pesos (US$185m), which will start in the third quarter of 2017 with completion scheduled for the second quarter of 2020.

The new port will be located at Barangay Tayud, Consolacion, which is designed to have a capacity of 500,000 teu, approximately five miles from the existing Cebu Port Authority (CPA) terminal.

With a deeper harbour of 45 ft and a capacity two times CPA’s, the new facility is expected to provide a long-term solution to the congestion at the existing port.

In addition to reduce congestion and accommodate port traffic, the regional government also approved a new bypass road.
