Selection of Rubber Fender System for V-Shaped Vessels Berthing

In the design of dock structures, the rubber fender system, as an auxiliary facility, is generally selected and arranged based on factors such as the type of arriving ship, berthing method, speed, and water level fluctuation. Different rubber fender systems are selected for different types of vessels to ensure the quality of the rubber fender system and reduce maintenance costs.

Work boats and patrol boats typically have a V-shaped hull, and several problems may arise when these vessels dock at a pier, including:

v shape vessel
  1. During tide changes, the protruding parts of the deck on both sides of the vessel may get stuck on the horizontal, oblique, and vertical rubber fender ends, as well as the installation seam of the vertical rubber fender.
  2. When the water level is high, the vessel may extend beyond the dock face, and the protruding parts of the vessel may collide with the collision protection fender and mooring bollards.
  3. When the water level is low, the protruding parts of the vessel rest against the dock structure, causing the vessel to be further away from the dock, making it difficult for people and cargo to embark and disembark.

For docks where V-shaped vessels berth, we recommend the use of turn cell fenders.

turn cell fenders

Turn cell fenders are installed on the dock surface. As the vessel rises with the tide, it first contacts the turn cell fenders and then slides up along the turn cell fenders. As the tide falls, the vessel will rest on the turn cell fenders and gradually slide down as the fenders rotate. The turn cell fenders are fixed on steel columnar structures located behind them. The foundation of the columns is connected to the dock platform and crossbeam through a planted rebar.

Turn cell fenders utilize the rotation of the rollers and compression deformation to absorb the impact energy of the vessel, and are mostly used in shipyards and docks. They are specially arranged horizontally along the movement direction of the vessel on both sides of the dock gate in the dock to ensure the safety of vessels entering and leaving the dock and the dock head structure.

Turn cell fenders are arranged vertically on the dock, and through operational and berthing tests, this method can effectively solve the phenomenon of vessel collision with dock facilities when V-shaped vessels are berthed, and the usage effect is good.
