Two Types of M-Type Fenders: Super M Fender vs. M Fender

In the marine and port engineering industry, the term “M-type fender” is widely used. However, it is important to note that there are actually two distinct types of M-type fenders, each designed for different applications. Although they share a similar “M” profile, their installation methods, functions, and performance requirements differ significantly.
Super M fender
The first type is the Super M Fender, which is commonly used for quay walls, jetties, and berths. Super M fenders are permanently fixed to port structures and are designed to absorb high berthing energy generated by vessels during docking operations. Their robust structure makes them suitable for heavy-duty port and terminal applications.
M fender
The second type is the M Fender, which is primarily used as a ship-mounted fender. Unlike Super M fenders, M fenders are installed on vessels to protect the hull during berthing or ship-to-ship operations. They are widely used on tugboats and workboats due to their compact design, flexibility, and excellent abrasion resistance, especially in confined harbors or during frequent maneuvering.
In conclusion, although both products are referred to as M-type fenders, their applications are fundamentally different. Super M fenders are designed for port infrastructure protection, while M fenders are intended for vessel-side protection, and selecting the correct type is essential for safe and efficient marine operations.
